CROSSINGS (page updated January 2019)

Wallaseytoll This is a list of the places in Britain (i.e exc Northern Ireland which has no tolls) which have crossings of tidal waters. There are about 108 bridges and tunnels.

The list starts at the Skye Bridge and goes round the coast counter clockwise.

There are nine places where tidal crossings are tolled - Mersey between Liverpool and Wirral, Mersey between Runcorn and Widnes (was free until October 2017), Cleddau bridge, Clifton Suspension bridge, Tamar bridge, Itchen bridge, Dartford Crossing, Humber bridge, Tyne Tunnels.

The toll rates are those for cars as at January 2019. Motorcycles pay less or nothing. Lorries pay more, in some cases substantially more.

The rates are for cash tolls. On Dartford and all Mersey crossings there are lower rates if Radio Frequency Identification Devices (sometimes called tags). At some other crossings there are prepaid tickets which are sold at a discount.

At the Dartford Crossing there are no tolls from 10pm to 6am. At some other crossings there there is a lower off peak rate.

In the case of Dartford and Halton crossings most residents for a small annual fee can cross toll free. At the Itchen bridge there are lower rates if you are a resident.

We do not include in the list -
a) Bridges that do not carry motor vehicles,
b) Penmaenpool Bridge across the Afon Mawddach near Dolgellau as it consists of rattling wooden planks and has a 5mph speed limit,
c) The two Transporter bridges at Middlesborough and Newport as they are more like ferries operated for tourists.
