18 October 1996 - Anti-toll Petition Signed By 20,400

A year to the day after the unpopular toll bridge to Skye opened, a petition bearing over 20,000 signatures calling for the tolls to be scrapped has been handed into Highland Regional Council.

The petition, organised by SKAT, contains the signatures of 20,400 people who took issue with the high level of the charges on the bridge.

SKAT spokeswoman Myrna Scott Moncrieff said that the petition had been signed both by locals and by people on holiday in the area from all over the world. She said the two main points raised by the tourists were incredulity at the level of the tolls and the belief that they would hit local communities very hard.
