2 January 1997 - New Year Brings New Protests & Price Rise

The people of Skye and Lochalsh celebrated the New Year by welcoming the price increase on the Bridge with a protest.

Bridge prices increased by approximately 4.5% to make it £8.80 return for a car just now, increasing to £11.20 in Spring!

Police have said that todays protests against the tolls, organised by SKAT, passed peacefully. A spokesman for Northern Constabulary said "A number of people were reported for refusing to pay the toll."

Meanwhile the Skye Bridge company issued the new prices for the bridge which came into effect from 1st January 1997.
